Getting Started in Counseling

Taking the First Step

If you’re reading this blog, it looks like you’ve already taken a step towards getting the support you’re looking for! It’s often said that the first steps are the hardest, and I know it can certainly feel that way regarding finding a counselor and starting the process.

If this is your first time looking for counseling you may be feeling overwhelmed with questions like:

  • What is a consultation?

  • What will sessions be like?

  • What is a sliding scale?

  • How do I know this is a good fit?

If you’ve tried counseling before and did not match with your counselor or your counselor isn’t seeing clients anymore, you may be concerned about starting over again. My hope with is to provide some insight on what this process looks like with me, and maybe clear up some of these questions and concerns.

Consultations

Many potential clients find it helpful to have a brief conversation prior to scheduling their first session. I offer free 15-minute phone consultations so that potential clients can get a feel for what it might be like to work together in a counseling relationship.

Consultations are where you can learn a little more about my approach, ask questions about logistics, and see if you feel we would be a good fit. I may ask you briefly about what you’re looking to work on so that I also know that I can meet your needs. Clients focus areas can from identity exploration, anxiety, or life transitions. A consultation is not a requirement by any means, but can be a helpful tool when starting out!

First Session

Whether we have a consultation or not, our first session together will be an opportunity for you to tell me about yourself and your story. One of the most important aspects of counseling is the connection between client and counselor, and this first session begins to set the stage for the connection to form. We may talk about what brings you in and what you hope to get from the experience. If you don’t have answers right away, that’s okay too.

We’ll also go over some of the logistics like confidentiality, payment, and scheduling policies. If you feel that you would like to continue with me, we will set up our next appointment and keep building a connection as you explore what is on your mind.

I have been in your shoes, whether you’re just starting out or have done this before and are starting over. I can relate to the feelings of overwhelm or fear about moving forward. This isn’t easy and I commend you for starting this journey! If you have questions or concerns that I didn’t address here or on the website, I’m happy to set up a free consultation to discuss further. Click the “Get Started” button at the top of the page or below this blog to set something up with me.
